Weddings Are Romantic
What could be more beautiful than a wedding? Weddings are romantic, exciting, nerve wracking, stressful, expensive and probably an awful lot more adjectives I could think up. They’re a reason for people to dress up and celebrate. But the most important thing about a wedding is the joining of two people together for their journey through life. One hopes that journey will last a lifetime. As a romance writer I guess I’m possibly a little biased but to me weddings will always signal the beginning of a new life. Where once there were two individuals, now there is a couple, ready to forge onward into uncharted waters and make their mark on their families, their community and their world. Its a wondrous transition from one lifestyle to another.
This past weekend we were fortunate to be guests at the wedding of a close friends’ son. The event gave us the added pleasure of traveling to a nearby city where we spent a couple of days, always a treat as even a couple of nights away is like a holiday. To be together with old friends and witness the marriage of two lovely young people was a wonderful treat. The celebrant spoke of their hands and how those hands would help mold their future. It was a beautiful piece of advice wrapped up so lyrically. Come the reception I’m sure many of us commiserated with the groom as he waited through numerous speeches for his turn. His nervousness was so extreme I wondered how his speech would be delivered when it finally came time to step forward. Instead of a stuttering, mumbling jumble of words I was half expecting, he gave the most eloquent and beautiful wedding speech I think I’ve ever heard. He finished by handing the microphone to his new wife with the comment that he expected she would want the last word.
Weddings inspire such emotion. It’s impossible not to remember those you’ve been involved with, your own, your children’s, your friends. It’s impossible not to compare the way people approach the traditions and accept or change them to suit their own wishes for the day. And its impossible not to get overwhelmed by the happiness and excitement that reins during the wedding day. Weddings have to be the epitome of romance at its best.
